Film or Digital

I had a few frames left in my Olympus XA (Kodak Portra 400 courtesy of WPPI) before dropping the film off at my lab and thought I’d have some fun with Alex before we went to get his spiffy new haircut.  Such a good sport… The film vs digital debate was a conversation topic that was much more pervasive than I could’ve possibly imagined at WPPI…. My thoughts on it… I like both!  I’m sure in the late 1800’s there were standoffs between wet plate photographers film photographers as there certainly were divisions between the traditional medium and large format photographers with the introduction of affordable, compact 35mm SLR’s around the turn of the century.  They are simply different mediums of expression/documentation/interpretation;  different tools for different occasions. I have shot just as much film as I have digital (but not for long!) and often find myself playing devil’s advocate for both in the eternal film vs digital argument. One thing I know for sure is that when I do shoot digital, I often find myself processing the photo to emulate the look of film.  I am fascinated by the fact that a lot of people confuse my digital for film and vice versa. Interested to hear people’s thoughts…
